Minecraft? What’s that, you ask?
Minecraft is the just one of the latest gaming crazes, and just about anyone under the age of 14 can explain it to you better than I can. Basically you create a world using blocks, mine for gems and stay away from these green things called creepers. It all looks a lot like the first video games that came out in the late 80’s. Why is it a fad? I have no idea, but when my 10-year-old son insisted on it as the theme for his birthday, I agreed.
These are the moments when Pinterest is my savior. Type in “Minecraft Birthday” and hundreds of pictures pop up, giving me tons of great ideas for this party. In the game everything is made of square blocks, so I used that as my jumping off point.
The cake had to be square, so instead of going out and buying square cake pans, I took a different route. When you stack 2 “Little Debbie Devil Squares” on top of each other it makes a perfect little cube, so I just stacked a whole bunch of them into a big cube! I found some plastic grass at the hobby shop and cut it to fit the to of the stack of little cakes, and tada! I created a cake that resembled a grass block!
To create other snacks for party in the “block” theme, I just took regular snacks and used a little mom-ination (that’s what I call my mommy magic).
Rice Crispy Treats were made with the chocolate version of the cereal, and I added a little black food coloring to the marshmallow mixture to make a “Coal” block. I made another batch of these and sprinkled green pop rocks onto the tops to create an “Emerald” Block. Next I took jumbo marshmallows and dipped them in to red candy melts to create “Red Mushrooms.” I even put little white chocolate dots on the top.
